Gloryholes review: Sheffield's 'raunchiest golf club' just got even naughtier (2024)

Adults-only golf clubs are becoming all the rage recently.

More and more people want to go out, have a few drinks, play mini golf and be shocked by the X-rated courses. The naughtier, ruder and seedier they are, the better, and when Yorkshire Live tried out Gloryholes in Sheffield city centre in December last year, we were a little bit underwhelmed.

Gloryholes started out in Nottingham, with Sheffield its second venture and Lincoln set to be the third. When I went, Gloryholes was in its infancy in Sheffield, but having been to the Nottingham course I expected more from the Steel City franchise.

There was only one course open, which was cool and quirky but very basic. I didn't feel there were very many well thought-out risqué elements and I could see half the course from the first hole.

But every new venture always has its teething problems, and in May 2022 I was invited back to Gloryholes to test out two new courses - Lucky Dip Holes and Gory Holes. Even from the off I could tell that a lot more thought and vision had gone into these two courses and they were both infinitely more challenging, exciting and raunchier than 'The Magical Lady Garden Holes’ which I tried on my first visit in December 2021.

I started off with Goryholes which really did live up to its name. It was gruesome, blood-curdling, terrifying and creepy - exactly what we wanted. But it wasn't serious all the way through as there were some genuinely hilarious sweary phrases plastered on the walls.

Instead of it all being in one room, Goryholes and Lucky Dip Holes was like a journey - you went through a door into a room that was completely different to the last and just like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, you didn't know what you were going to get.

Every room had a splattering of blood and the courses were really well thought out with much more challenging obstacles and brilliant photo opportunities throughout. The sofa on the 'hanging with my besties' hole was probably my favourite and I knew my Instagram was going to be absolutely littered with posts of me posing at every hole. You can even lock your mate or partner in a prison cell at the end for a classic behind bars pose.

Goryholes impressed, and the wacky Lucky Dip Holes did too. It was so fun, varied, whacky and crude throughout - it was brilliant. One of the holes involved putting the ball up Donkey Kong's unmentionable and to be honest, I struggled to take pictures which were suitable for publication, which to me is testament to just how far Gloryholes went to really make it as sleazy and sordid as possible.

There were surreal mythical paintings showing a unicorn doing things it really shouldn't. When you walk through the door, there's Mickey and Minnie Mouse pulling some very questionable poses and I was giggling like a naughty schoolboy at each turn when I spotted something else amusing as I went round the course.

Again, there were plenty of posing and video opportunities. You can stand inside a Barbie doll box and even video yourself falling through the bar like Del Boy in an Only Fools & Horses-themed hole.

It's worth a mention to the staff throughout who were fantastic and made sure we had drinks if we needed them and allowed us to order as we went round. They were all incredibly fun and friendly and made our experience all the more comfortable and enjoyable.

After you've finished playing golf, the party carries on upstairs at the bar which has been decked out to look like an American diner. It was a lot busier than when we last went and the vibe was great with a DJ playing dance tunes and everyone socialising and having a great time.

Underwhelmed was the word on my last visit but I have to admit Gloryholes has really pulled out all the stops to make the improvements it needed to. It occupies a prime location in the middle of Sheffield and I can only see this place getting busier and busier, particularly if they are able to continue keeping the courses fresh.

Talking to management afterwards, it seems like they have big plans for the place and I personally cannot wait to see what they come up with - and just how rude and raunchy they get.
