Fury's punching power, Gomes' special message and Lampard's 'double' (2024)

Tyson Fury taking Deontay Wilder's WBC heavyweight belt dominated the world of sport over the weekend and deservedly so.

'The Gypsy King' proved his doubters wrong by flooring boxing’s most feared power puncher in the third and fifth rounds before forcing his corner to throw in the towel during the seventh.

It moves us a step closer to an all-British Fury vs Anthony Joshua super fight, however, there were plenty of other memorable moments this weekend and talkSPORT.com has picked out the best bits...

Messi being Messi

Lionel Messi was at his mesmeric best on Saturday notching four goals in a 5-0 win for Barcelona against Eibar, including a 26-minute hat-trick.

The Argentine had not scored in his previous four games, but put his side ahead in the 14th minute by dancing and barging his way past three players to slot home the opener.

And new signing Martin Braithwaite set up Messi for his fourth, having come off the bench.

"Messi congratulated me, he's a great guy and tried to make me feel comfortable on the pitch by passing to me often," the 28-year-old Dane said.

"I'm very happy to have given my first assist to Leo."

INCREDIBLE

Tyson Fury made a mockery of those who criticised his punching power as he knocked out Deontay Wilder on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

The ‘Gypsy King’shocked the worldby flooring the ‘Bronze Bomber’ in rounds three and five before forcing his corner to throw in the towel during the seventh.

Footage (below) has emerged which shows the first knockdown from a ringside angle, in which you can hear the sound of Fury’s power.

At the post-fight presser, the Brit recalled: “Don’t forget, when I came here they said I can’t punch.

“Deontay Wilder said himself that I’ve got two pillow fists.

“But you know, not bad for an old fat guy who can’t punch, eh? Done alright, didn’t I?

“I’m an old feather duster who can’t break an egg.”

This was ringside. Now you see how hard Fury hits? #fury #wilder #boxing #WilderFury3 #FuryWilder #WilderFury2 #furyvswilder2 pic.twitter.com/et5qmB6jff

LEGEND

Tyson Fury claimed the 30th win of his career on Saturday night in Las Vegas, but maybe it was his most significant.

The 'Gypsy King' destroyed Deontay Wilder with a stunning performance, forcing the American’s team to throw in the towel in the seventh round.

Fury had utterly dominated Wilder from the outset and the long-reigning WBC champion couldn’t muster any kind of response to Fury’s waves of attacks.

Before the fight, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis were honoured in the ring by the WBC.

The MGM Grand looked on as Tyson and Holyfield had a warmer embrace than one might expect - considering the former bit the latter’s ear off once upon a time.

Still, it was fitting that Tyson was in attendance to watch a man who was named after him go for the WBC heavyweight title.

When Fury finally sealed the deal in that seventh round, BT Sport cameras caught Tyson’s fantastic reaction to the result (below).

Fury has made no secret of what an inspiration Tyson is to him and he appeared on the boxing legend’s podcast late last year.

Before the fight, Tyson admitted he was a fan of Fury and for obvious reasons.

“I always root for him because he was named after me,” the youngest heavyweight champion in history said.

“That’s the natural thing to do, right? I’m biased towards him.

“I don’t care how hard you punch, it’s hard to beat somebody who doesn’t wanna quit."

BRING IT ON

Plenty of boxers, past and present, made the trip to Las Vegas to witness Tyson Fury's incredible victory over Deontay Wilder at the MGM Grand.

Heavyweight rival Dillian Whyte chose to stay at home to soak up the action as his fellow Brit produced one of the best displays in boxing history to claim the WBC crown.

Whyte teamed up with Sky for a Gogglebox-type video alongside Johnny Nelson to analysis the fight, with the pair's live reactions from all the dramatic talking points filmed.

On seeing the fight being waved off, Whyte clapped his fellow British fighter, but not before he could stake his own claim on the situation.

He finished: “It looks like me and Fury’s going to get it on then.”

Whyte has been the number one contender and mandatory fighter for the WBC heavyweight belt for over 1,000 days but still hasn’t received a title fight.

The Body Snatcher has never been one to mince his words and even called out his own promoter, Eddie Hearn, on Sunday morning - telling him to do 'what's right' moving forward.

How about doing what’s right and forcing him to fight me first as the number 1 challenger

WELCOME BACK

Everton midfielder Andre Gomes made his first appearance in four months at Arsenal, marking an incredible swift comeback from a horror ankle break.

The 26-year-old returned to training back in January to the shock of many in the game due to the severity of the injury he suffered against Tottenham in November.

The Portuguese star took to the pitch as a 60th minute substitute with the Toffees chasing the game.

Unfortunately for Gomes it wasn't to be a dream return, with Carlo Ancelotti's men coming on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller at the Emirates.

Following the 3-2 defeat, Gomes took to social media (below) to express his gratitude to all of those who supported him during his rehabilitation.

🔵 I would prefer to write after a win, but just need to say it loud... THANK YOU to everyone who showed me love in those 4 tough months, specially to you Evertonians. You gave me extra energy to push myself to the limit and come back stronger 💙 @Everton pic.twitter.com/2IgRDpGLeU

SPECIAL MOMENT

Raul Jimenez notched his 21st goal of the campaign in Wolves' comprehensive 3-0 victory over Norwich, dedicating the strike to his pregnant fiancee.

The Mexico international scored his side's third goal against basem*nt boys Norwich, before celebrating putting the ball underneath his shirt and kissing the ball to indicate he is expecting a baby.

The Wolves star and his girlfriend Daniela Basso announced earlier this month they are expecting their first child.

The prolific forward revealed in an interview with HELLO! that he'd been having even greater success in front of goal since receiving the good news towards the end of last year.

"Since I found out the good news in November, I've been scoring more goals," he said.

Congratulations to both Raul and Daniela!

SUPER FRANK

Frank Lampard's done the double (already) over his former boss Jose Mourinho.

Incredibly, Chelsea's 2-1 win over Tottenham means Lampard's boys are the first team to ever beat a side managed by Jose Mourinho home and away in the same league season.

To rub salt in Mourinho's wounds, his former midfielder also came out on top when Derby knocked Mourinho's Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup last season.

Thus the managers' head-to-head record is three from three for the apprentice against the master. Result.

BRILLIANT

A stunning Ollie Watkins goal sparked an impressive Brentford comeback to rescue a 2-2 draw against Blackburn on Saturday.

An Adam Armstrong brace had put the visitors 2-0 up inside 54 minutes.

But Brentford responded eight minutes later with a superb half-volley from Watkins, who bagged his 21st goal of the season.

And the comeback was complete when Said Benrahma converted from the penalty spot on 71 minutes after Mads Roerslev was brought down by Amari’i Bell.

QUALITY

Lyle Taylor underlined his importance to Charlton with a superb solo goal in a 3-1 victory against Luton Town on Saturday.

The Addicks kept hold of their star striker despite several approaches for his services in the January transfer window.

And that decision has proved critical with Lee Bowyer's men continuing to steer clear of relegation trouble with a deserved three points over the relegation-threatened Hatters.

Taylor was once again the south London's attacking lynchpin, opening the scoring with a delightful solo goal.

The former AFC Wimbledon forward showed brilliant awareness and control to take down a lofted ball, before a delightful flick set him up to finish with aplomb from a right-footed drive.

Taylor added a second after the break with one of his trademark penalties, as academy graduate George Lapslie added a third for Bowyer's side.

😲🙌 Outrageous control, skill, turn and finish from Lyle Taylor!

😎 And then it was coolness personified - as ever - for his penalty.
